MS4 Early Graduation Update and Town Hall Questions Answered

The opportunity to graduate early is a call to service in a time of critical and rapidly shifting medical need to manage a humanitarian crisis. It has been, and will continue to be, impossible to predict what the Health System’s needs are and what the work will be like for those who choose to start early. All the Program Directors are aware of this, and understand that anyone who starts early will be working as part of a general Medical Corps, deployed where the need is greatest. In addition, the ACGME has made it very clear that students joining these efforts cannot begin working in their specialty as part of their formal training program.

The GME Office’s first priority is to onboard as many of the 45 students who have matched in the Mount Sinai Health System as possible. Students in this cohort need to inform the GME Office of their intentions by April 8. After April 8, when it is clear how many Sinai-matched students have been on-boarded and what the clinical needs on the Health System are, the GME Office will gather the names of other interested students and make a decision about on-boarding a second cohort of students into the Medical Corps.

Complete the Early Graduation Check-out Form by April 6.

The PDF here addresses the questions and answers from Wednesday’s Town Hall, in addition to post-TH questions submitted by the class representatives, and have been updated with the current Medical Corps details.

MS3 VSLO, ERAS and More

Our team has participated in several AAMC-hosted meetings in the past two days that aimed to gather information from the education, student affairs, admissions and diversity communities regarding the impact on our students and learning environment as result of the COVID-19 pandemic. We were proud to share in the solidarity with our peers who remain committed to serving our students with a lens of equity and relayed important concerns that are weighing heavily on us and you; VSLO and away rotations and the ERAS timeline consumed a large portion of these conversations.

While the AAMC provided no timeline by which decisions will be made, we are very strongly considering resuming the VSLO and away rotation processing and will send an update early next week. It will be helpful for you to begin collecting your personal health information from your Mount Sinai MyChart in the meantime.
