NYC Curfew and Protesting Guidelines

New York City has imposed a citywide curfew, starting this evening, from 11 pm to 5 am. If you are traveling to or from work during these hours, be sure to carry your Mount Sinai ID card in case you are stopped by the police.

Please be safe when engaging in your constitutional right to gather and express your views through protest. While there are many well-intended movements, we are also bearing witness to criminal activity that can put bystanders in very dangerous and compromised situations with very short notice. If you find yourself in this situation and become detained by police, know your rights. The following pictogram also provides quick tips of what to bring and not to bring when engaging in a protest thanks to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).

Safety Assistance

News reports indicate that some of the turmoil in our city may be easing, but it is still important to be careful as you travel around. As you know, the citywide curfew has been extended through the weekend, and will be in effect each night, unless otherwise announced, from 8 pm to 5 am. The city has made some changes to transportation options during the curfew:

To ensure the safety of all providing care at The Mount Sinai Hospital, the following measures will be implemented this evening: - Security will be offering escorts from The Mount Sinai Hospital campus to your vehicles. Please call 212-241-6068 for an escort. - Overnight sleeping accommodations will be available. To request accommodations, please email sleepingaccommodations@mountsinai.org. - Food and refreshments will be available outside the Plaza Café beginning at 8 pm. - Free parking has been reinstated through Sunday at the garages that offered it during the COVID-19 crisis under the same criteria. - If you would like to talk to someone about your commuting plan, call our security office at 212-241-6068.

White Coats for Black Lives National Phone Call

White Coats for Black Lives is heartbroken and outraged at the recent murders of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Tony McDade. We stand in solidarity with the people taking to the streets to protest white supremacy, anti-Blackness, and police brutality. We also recognize the important role that medical schools and hospitals play in upholding white supremacy, and will continue to fight tirelessly for racial justice within our medical institutions.

If you would like to learn more about our work and join our leadership, WC4BL will be holding a national phone call at 5 PM EST on Saturday, June 6. We hope that you will be able to join us. In the meantime, we encourage you to participate in the Movement for Black Lives Week of Action.

Wellness Advisor Spotlight

I’m Patrick Burden, a Program Coordinator in Care Management at Mount Sinai. I’m originally from Missouri, and first moved to NYC 10 years while getting my MSW from Columbia. Currently, I supervise Social Workers and Care Coordinators working throughout the health system to address psychosocial and SDOH needs for our highest risk patients. This was my first year as a WA, and I really enjoyed it! I loved getting real-life, real-time perspectives on our medical school and being able to learn so much about each student. I’m happy to see how empathy shines through and what drives the passion for medicine. A completely random, fun fact about me: once on vacation in Los Angeles, I judged a gingerbread house making competition at the LA County Fair!

Don’t forget your Wellness Advisor! We are here for you – we can offer tip and tools, support, and can provide alternative ways to look at small or large challenges. Reach out to your WA to get help navigating this unusual and difficult time. If you don’t remember who your WA is, reach out to Jocelyn.Childs@mountsinai.org and she will reconnect you.
