Pathway to Residency Program Announcement

The Departments of Medical Education and Graduate Medical Education have collaborated with the Office of Student Affairs to provide the ISMMS Class of 2021 with a pathway that will provide medical students with the opportunity to interview and be considered for acceptance directly into one of the Mount Sinai Health System residency programs in their chosen specialty.

Although May 20 is the deadline for programs to express interest, we are thrilled to share the current list of participating Mount Sinai Residency Programs by Site and look forward to updating you during Wednesday’s Town Hall of several others.

Away Rotation Policy

Attending away rotations has been a rite of passage for senior medical students as an opportunity to demonstrate residency program interest, to experience, first-hand, the learning environment and to explore a new city/region ahead of submitting applications. These rotations often result in a letter of recommendation and connection to key faculty and residents that serve as continued communication channels during the residency application process.

COVID-19 has interrupted the clinical education of most, if not all, medical students. This next year is different in so many aspects and guiding our decisions have been the commitment to safety, equity and on-time graduation.

On May 12, 2020 the Coalition for Physician’s Accountability released national guidelines for away rotations during the 2020-2021 academic year:

Except under the following circumstances, away rotations are discouraged across the country:

It is a medical school’s responsibility to regulate away rotations in an effort to maintain safety, promote equity through the residency application process, and promote well-being. ISMMS students have access within our health system to all applicable clinical experiences to support their clinical education, meet graduation requirements, and support their specialty application in any given field.

Effective May 18, 2020 and consistent with national guidelines, ISMMS medical students will not be permitted to attend in-person away rotations. Until further notice, a student will not be able to obtain credit for performing an in-person away rotation. Any future-dated away rotation previously approved will be dropped from the student’s schedule. Additionally, ISMMS will not host in-person visiting students from other institutions.

If students have been accepted or are in the process of applying for an away rotation(s), students are encouraged to reach out to host institutions to learn if the delivery will be converted from in-person to online. ISMMS medical students may complete an online away rotation for credit and should complete the existing away elective request process to seek approval.

The AAMC will reopen the VSLO/VSAS program on Wednesday, May 27, 2020 at 9:00 a.m. ET.

USMLE Weekly Announcement

We continue to hear heartbreaking examples of last minute cancellations and confusing messages and despite these disruptions, you remain focused on your studies and continue to put in the time on practice questions and test readiness. Please continue sharing your experiences with Drs. Linkowski and Cunningham so that we can rely these experiences to the NBME. We also want to hear about moments of goodwill or kindness experienced by anyone with whom you come into contact at Prometric, too.

Today’s announcement speaks to the utility of six medical schools that will serve as testing centers. We remain hopeful that ISMMS or a nearby NYC school joins this very short list in the near future.
