Shadowing
If you are interested in shadowing, the best practice would be to search for a physician in the Mentor Database and reach out to him/her. Each department varies in shadowing policies. If you have any questions, please reach out to Student Affairs or the department itself for suggestions and information.
Specialty Focused Mentoring Program
The Specialty Focused Mentoring Program focuses on building the most experienced and prepared medical school graduates in all medical and surgical specialties. Each year, the program pairs 1st and 2nd year medical students with selected 3rd and 4th year mentors with similar career interests. For example, a 1st year interested in dermatology will get paired with a 3rd or a 4th year going into dermatology. These mentors offer advice about research and shadowing opportunities as well as provide guidance in selecting 3rd and 4th year electives. Some have even brought their mentees on to research projects and are now publishing their work together. These mentors take a vested interest in their mentees and are often there to help answer questions ranging from “How do I get to the Peds building?” to “Do I need to dress up for that rotation?” or “what do I want to do with my life?” Emails will be sent out during the first semester of each year to join.
