What should students be doing in year 1 and 2?
Searching for research mentors early; students should speak with one of the Specialty Advisors as soon as they know they want to go to Dermatology; often there are research opportunities during the summers or between 3rd and 4th year that enhance their chances of getting into a program.
What should students be doing in year 3 and 4?
Students should pass STEP I and above 240 for STEP II. Some students who do exceptionally well on Step I could delay Step II until after interview season potentially. Looking for a year-long year-off fellowship between 3rd and 4th year is a good idea, especially at the institution to which they desire to do dermatology.
Is an away elective recommended?
Yes ideally, one elective at the institution the student is especially interested in, and one to two electives at other institutions.
Other general info
Always seek advice as early as possible in med school. Having a first author publication in Dermatology is an important criteria for some residency programs, including the one here.

Any specific writers needed?
One from a dermatologist, one from a mentor, one from a clerkship in which the student did well, but there are no standards.
