Advice from Specialty Advisor

What should students be doing in year 1 and 2?
Get involved with EMIG and pursue some ED shadowing, ideally at multiple sites with the Sinai system. Identify a potential mentor and/or research mentor if applicable. Consider taking the NEXUS "Intro to Emergency Medicine course" to learn more about the field. Make your interest in EM known to a specialty advisor early on, even if you are considering other specialties.

What should students be doing in year 3 and 4?
1. Consider taking EM related electives to explore the field (EM/Critical Care, MSBI Intro to Emergency Med, EKG, Ultrasound, Toxicology, tailor-made electives, etc). Note that these electives are not required for a successful EM applicant, but can be useful to help develop skills and clarify the career choice. 2. Meet with one of the Specialty Advisors in the fall of third year to express interest and strategize about scheduling of the MS4 EM Clerkship and away rotations. Applications for away rotations (July-September) are accepted as early as April of the student's third year and historically fill very quickly. 3. Consider attending one of the large EM conferences (SAEM, ACEP, AAEM, CORD). Scholarships are often available for these.

Is an away elective recommended?
Yes, it is required to do one away elective, ideally at a program that will be high on your potential Match rank list. Of note, these away electives were almost universally cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19, and therefore an away rotation was not required for this application year. The status of 2021 away electives is currently unclear. Virtual “away” electives may be available in lieu of formal away electives, but these were purely optional for EM applicants in 2020.

LoRs

Departmental letter necessary?
Yes, there is a committee that produces one Standardized Letter of Evaluation (SLOE) for each student applying in EM.

All from the specific specialty or from other specialties as well?
Two SLOEs from EM are recommended. In the past, many students have sought three SLOEs; this is not necessary.
