Advice from Specialty Advisor

What should students be doing in year 1 and 2?
Exploring Internal Medicine and its specialties through clinical shadowing and many of the faculty are excellent research mentors.

What should students be doing in year 3 and 4?
Consider electives in medicine specialties. Students should reach out to the specialty advisors in the late Spring of third year to discuss the residency application process.

Is an away elective recommended?
Away rotations are not required or expected. Students may do them to explore a program or region of the country.

Departmental letter necessary?
Yes

Any specific writers needed?
This letter is written by a designated faculty member and signed by the Chair of Medicine.

How many LoRs are required? Department of Medicine LoR + 2 additional letters

All from the specific specialty or from other specialties as well?
In addition to the departmental letter one letter should be form an internist or specialist who knows the student well and interacted with them in year 3 or 4. The third letter can be from any specialty or a mentor letter.
