Advice from Specialty Advisor
What should students be doing in year 1 and 2?
In years 1 and 2, students should concentrate on doing well on step 1. Also, working on a research project and preferably publishing the results in a neurosurgery journal would be ideal but not necessarily a requirement.
What should students be doing in year 3 and 4?
In year 3 students should meet with Dr. Caridi to discuss applying in Neurosurgey and plan for away elective for the begiining of year 4. At the beginning of year 4, students should do a subinternship on the neurosurgery service here at Sinai and should arrange at least one away elective as well. They should remain engaged with the neurosurgery department here, attending grand rounds, etc.
Is an away elective recommended?
At least one away elective is recommended and two would be ideal.

Departmental letter necessary?
A letter from the chairperson of the department is required.
Any specific writers needed?
A letter from the program director is also recommended. It is also recommended to have at least one letter of recommendation from the chairman at another program (one in which an away elective was done).
