Get good grades, board scores, reach out to potential mentors for research projections
What should students be doing in year 3 and 4?
Meet with Dr. Lerner mid third year to discuss timing of the surgical subintenhip and electives, reach out to mentors; engage in research if possible.

No, away elective not required for the application but can help you know a program or institution better.
Other general info
Depending on the residency they will be interested in your # of pubs or your research experience. Abstracts/posters count as pubs/research. Also research experience in a lab without publication counts. Extracurriculars are important--something that shows you can be part of a team and take a leadership role.
