Advice from Specialty Advisor
What should students be doing in year 1 and 2?
Urology is competitive. We recommend research in year 1 summer and being outstanding during your subinternships.
What should students be doing in year 3 and 4?
Reach out to Drs. Say/Marshall in spring of year 3 to discuss sub-internships and where to apply for residency. Also covered is the "do's and don'ts" of subinternships and when/how to ask for letters. After subinternships in fall of 4th year, Drs. Say/Marshall will meet with students about interviewing tips. At the conclusion of interviews s/he meets with students to discuss match rank lists.
Is an away elective recommended?
We recommend that students complete the Mount Sinai subinternship first, and then at least 2 more subinternships at other institutions. Drs. Say/Marshall meets with interested students in the spring of year 3 to discuss their geographic preferences, look at their backgrounds, and try to be strategic about where to do electives.
Should I take STEP 2 Early?" Yes, please take Step 2 early enough so that it will be included in your Urology application. If you are unsure of exact timing, talk to your Faculty Advisor and/or Drs. Say/Marshall

Departmental letter necessary?
Yes
Any specific writers needed?
Dr. Ash Tewari
All from the specific specialty or from other specialties as well?
I recommend getting 3 letters. One should be from our department chair, one should be from a sub-internship, one should be from another faculty member here or a sub-I, and the fourth can be any attending from any department, but urology is a bit preferable.
