Advice from Specialty Advisor

What should students be doing in year 1 and 2?
I would get involved in the Vasco surgery interest group. I would also recommend getting involved in research projects within our division of Vasco surgery. Many of our surgeons have multiple ongoing projects. The summer is a perfect time to get involved in a research project. The goal of these projects would be to present abstract at local, regional, or national meetings in vascular surgery.

What should students be doing in year 3 and 4?
As a third year, I would recommend rotating on the Vasco server service during the general surgery core rotation. The Society for Vascular surgery has multiple student programs that are available which also provide funding to attend our national meeting. Further, our local and regional societies also encourage student involvement and have student programs.

Is an away elective recommended?
Yes. I would recommend doing a sub internship on our vascular surgery service followed by an away elective.
