Travel to/from clinical sites
NOTE: Bring emergency PPE kit from MedEd with you
While public transportation is currently considered a safe option, MedEd will also be enhancing travel services to and from clinical sites in the coming months:
- Continued use of a rideshare program:
- For Block 0 and 1, students will be able to use the UBER rideshare program for ALL clerkship and clinical sites, without any time restrictions.
- Students should have received an email from UBER with instructions on how to activate their profile.
- Enhanced health system shuttle buses. You can use the live shuttle tracker HERE.
- Additional shuttles through the Department of Medical Education to specific sites at times that align with clerkship start and end times-- more information to come!
- As per general guidelines, please avoid using public transportation, ride sharing apps, or cabs unless needed for essential work or urgent personal business
Arrival at clinical sites
- Hand hygiene should be performed as soon as possible upon arrival at the hospital/school arena.
- Upon arrival, please switch out your street face covering for a surgical mask, which can be found at the security desks at the hospital entrances.
- As always, practice thorough hand hygiene before and after every patient encounter and upon entering and leaving a school room/space.
- Wipe down stethoscopes and medical equipment after every use
- Practice social distancing and try to maintain a 6 foot distance from others in the hospital/school arena (room capacities will be reduced in order to permit appropriate social distancing when possible)
- Do not crowd the elevators at clinical sites. Keep an arm’s length distance from others, and build in extra time for elevator travel.
- NOTE: ALWAYS check the patient’s electronic medical record using a computer, iPad mini provided by MedEd or other mobile device and don the proper PPE BEFORE entering the patient room.
Leaving clinical sites
- Remove all PPE except street PPE (face covering) before leaving the hospital
- For those in procedural settings, change into street clothes before leaving the hospital
- For all other settings, changing into street clothes before leaving the hospital is not necessary
Returning home from clinical sites
- Wash your hands upon arrival at home
- There is no need to change out of clinical clothes unless soiled or dirty
- As per general guidelines, if you and your housemates are feeling well, interact with each other as you normally would
Visiting family and friends
- Currently, there are no school guidelines for personal travel. Please stay up-to-date on CDC guidelines on safe travel during the COVID-19 pandemic
- At this point, visiting other households for non-essential reasons is not recommended. Instead, choose socially distant gatherings: wear face coverings, stay 6 feet apart, and stay outside
- Exercise increased precaution around elderly, immunocompromised and other high-risk individuals
- Large gatherings will only be allowed as per local, state and hospital system protocols
- Do not crowd the elevator in Aron Hall. Keep an arm’s length distance from others, build in extra time to wait for an available elevator, and/or take the stairs
