Mission Statement
InFocus promotes knowledge and skill development in topics critical to medical practice and biomedical research in the 21st century. The in-depth immersion experience is closely aligned with our medical school mission.
Course Goals
- Prepare medical students in their current and future roles as stewards of safe, high quality, high value, patient centered care
- Teach key principles of quality improvement, patient safety, and systems innovation
- Learn clerkship-specific, patient-centered skills that provide the foundation for the safe and competent practice and advocacy of medicine
- Provide hands-on experiential learning devoted to quality improvement principles and safety science
- Develop a culture of safety and quality that medical students will carry with them throughout their training and career
- Cultivate interest in healthcare quality and systems innovation
- Promote habits of self-care and wellness to optimize learning and the ability to care for patients
- Create a safe space for reflecting on clinical experiences to foster enduring learning and growth
- Provide support and resources to explore interests and priorities, and develop career goals
Grading Policy/ Criteria for Passing
Component of Assessment: % of grade
Completion of InFOCUS 5 assignments:
- IF5 Process Map - 25%
- IF5 Fishbone Diagram - 25%
- Year 3 Essentials Quiz - 25%
IF5 Exam - 25%
All InFocus 5 sessions are MANDATORY for all students
- Missing any InFocus 5 session will result in points deducted from final grade - See attendance policy in student handbook
- Excuses must be submitted to medstudentabsence@mssm.edu prior to the session
- Any absence for InFocus 5 skill sessions, excused or unexcused, must be remediated – students will be contracted with deadlines during/following InFocus
- Attendance will be taken using iAttend for lectures/small group sign-ins
- Refer to section 12 for Grading Policy/Criteria for Passing/Remediation.
*Criteria for Passing the course: To pass the course you need to score >= 70 (or 2SD) in all educational components.
