Advice from Specialty Advisor

What should students be doing in year 1 and 2?
It is important to establish a relationship with a faculty member in the department and to engage in a scholarly project in the field.

W hat should students be doing in year 3 and 4?
Year 3: do the selective that is part of the Surgery-Anesthesia Clerkship or seek out other electives that can expose you to the field. Meet with Dr. Colvin mid-year to start to discuss the application process and plan for electives in the summer and early fall of year 4.

Year 4: sub-internship, away rotations

Is an away elective recommended?
Yes; away electives are an essential component of the application process and most applicants do 2-3 away electives in addition to an orthopedics subinternship at their home school.

LoRs

Departmental letter necessary?
Yes

Any specific writers needed?
The chairperson writes this letter.

All from the specific specialty or from other specialties as well?
Can have a mix. The most important thing is to have physicians who know the applicant well.
