RECEIVING CREDIT
To receive full credit for an elective you must complete each step of the elective process:
Select and register for the elective
Complete the elective
Ensure that your mentor/preceptor has submitted an evaluation of your performance
Complete your evaluation of the elective through One45
GENERAL INFORMATION
Clinical electives are taken during the third and fourth years at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Types of Electives Include:
ISMMS Clinical Electives (Register on Empower)
Clinical Tailor-Made Electives (Submit formstack)
Tailor-Made Research/ Non-Clinical Electives (Submit formstack)
Away Electives (electives at other Institutions) (Apply on VSLO and submit formstack)
Global Health Electives (electives abroad)

Overview of Electives:
28 weeks of elective credit is required to graduate for the Class of 2023 and beyond
40 hours equals one week of elective credit
Electives must fall between 2 - 4 weeks in length
Only one 1-week elective (40 hours completed within a consecutive 7-day time period) is permitted
16 weeks maximum can be allotted for non-clinical/research elective time
Longitudinal electives listed in the electives catalog are allowed
40 hours of elective time completed over a period of weeks or months
Tailor-made longitudinal electives are not allowed- the available options are listed in the catalog on Empower
ELECTIVES AND CLERKSHIPS
Electives cannot be taken concurrently. Longitudinal electives may be taken concurrently with another non-required rotation (e.g. another elective) as long as the hours do not conflict.
REPEATING ELECTIVES
If a student wishes to repeat an elective that has already been taken, it is possible to do so, however, elective credit will not be given again.
USMLE STEP 2 CK BOARD REVIEW COURSE (Please read the section that describes you.)
I am using the course materials live (or close to it) and will complete the course by the end of July.
Sign up for MED1428 Section 01 in Empower before July 4, 2022. You must sign up for the course before it begins to receive credit; no retroactive credit can be given.
Use the course materials live. Finish any missed sessions by the end of July and attest that you completed the course in Blackboard for the course. If you do not attest by the end of July, you will not receive credit.
At the end of July, you will receive credit.
I am taking the course asynchronously and will complete the materials by December 31, 2022 (Step 2 deadline for Graduating Class 2023).
Sign up for MED1428 Section E2 in Empower before you intend to utilize the course materials. You will be prompted to choose a 2 week timeframe. Make sure this 2 weeks is within your study period. If you do not register, you cannot receive credit, even if you complete the course, You cannot retroactively register.
Complete all course materials during your study period. Attest that you completed the materials at the end of your study period.
Once per semester, all those who have completed the course will receive credit.
I am using the course materials and testing my Scholarly Year.
Use the course materials as you wish.

Complete all of last year's course materials.
Sign up for MED1428 Section E2 in Empower by July 5, 2022.
Attest that you completed all course materials in Blackboard in this year's course.
Once per semester, all those who have completed the course will receive credit.
USMLE STEP 1 BOARD REVIEW COURSE
Starting in academic year 22-23, all students entering 3rd year will automatically receive 2 weeks of elective credit for Step 1 Board Review. No registration is required.
Remediation work (including remediation for Step 1 and/or Step 2) is not eligible for elective credit
MANDATORY DOCUMENTS
All documents must be submitted to the Assistant Registrar, with all required signatures, no less than 2 weeks prior to the desired start date of the elective. No retroactive credit will be granted for an elective that is not submitted and approved PRIOR to the start date.
