DON'T DROP THE BALL: EFFECTIVE TEAMWORK IN THE CLERKSHIPS
Session Description: In this session, students will build on the teamwork skills you have learned during The Art and Science of Medicine in years 1 and 2, as well as the patient advocacy skills presented elsewhere in InFocus 5. The session will also provide opportunities to link the skills being presented to your clinical experiences as well as to overarching patient safety and quality initiatives at the institution.

Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, the student learners will:
- Summarize the characteristics of effective teams
- Describe the different types of teams
- Demonstrate effective communication techniques to ensure patient safety including SBAR, Call-out, Check-back and Handoff
- Define situational monitoring, situational awareness and shared mental model
- Identify the role of the 3rd year student in the STEP process for situational monitoring
- Apply these skills to their upcoming clerkships
